A Ground Source Heat Pump System for a Primary School in Bushey, Watford

Client brief

Little Reddings Primary School in Bushey, Watford, commissioned a new school building under a Department for Education project. The brief was to deliver a sustainable, low-carbon heating and cooling solution that would provide a comfortable learning environment all year round while reducing running costs and supporting long-term sustainability goals.

Oursolution

We designed, supplied, and installed a high-efficiency ground source heat pump system, including:

  • Two NIBE F1345-60 kW ground source heat pumps
  • 12 boreholes connected via a ground manifold
  • 1,000-litre buffer tank for optimal thermal performance
  • Pressurisation unit, magnetic filters, and dosing pot for system protection

In winter, the system provides heating through fan coil units and radiators. In summer, it delivers highly efficient passive cooling by transferring heat from the building into the ground, reducing energy use and improving the system’s efficiency ahead of the next heating season.

Project success

  • Delivered a reliable, low-carbon heating and cooling solution.
  • Reduced energy consumption and running costs through efficient passive cooling.
  • Created a comfortable learning environment, supporting student and staff wellbeing year-round.
  • Provided a future-proof, sustainable system aligned with government environmental goals.
