How it works
Solar PV panels capture sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter then converts this into alternating current (AC) — the type of electricity used in your home or business.
You can use this electricity immediately, store it in a battery, or export it back to the grid for payment under a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff.
When designed as part of an integrated system, solar PV can power your heat pump, battery storage, and electric vehicle charging, reducing your reliance on fossil fuels and stabilising your long-term energy costs.

Looking for solar for your business?
We also design and deliver commercial-scale solar PV systems for offices, schools, care homes, and large developments – helping organisations lower operational costs and meet sustainability targets.

Why Solar PV?
1. Reduce your energy bills
Generate free electricity during daylight hours and protect yourself from rising energy prices.
2. Cut your carbon emissions
Every kWh you generate from solar is one you don’t need from the grid, helping you play your part in a net-zero future.
3. Benefit from Smart Export Guarantee payments
Get paid for surplus electricity exported back to the grid through your energy provider.
4. Increase property value and energy performance
Once installed there is virtually no maintenance. On pitched roofs, rain does most of the cleaning. The panels can be expected to last for over 25 years.
5. Integrate with other renewables
Combine with battery storage and heat pumps for greater efficiency and self-sufficiency.

Better Planet’s approach
At Better Planet, we don’t just install solar panels – we design complete renewable energy systems.
Our engineers assess your property, energy use, and future plans to deliver the right balance of performance, payback, and aesthetics.
We offer:
- Bespoke system design and shading analysis
- Integration with battery storage and EV charging
- Options for pitched and flat roofs, ground mounts, or carports
- Full installation, commissioning, and aftercare
- Accredited design and installation under MCS and ISO 9001:2015
Is solar PV right for you?
Solar PV works best on unshaded roofs with good exposure to the sun — typically south, east, or west-facing. However, even partially shaded or flat roofs can be viable with the right equipment and design.
Our team can model your expected generation, payback period, and carbon savings before installation, giving you a clear picture of the benefits.
- Do solar panels work on cloudy days?
-
Yes. While they’re most effective in direct sunlight, panels still generate electricity under cloud cover, just at a reduced rate.
- How long do solar panels last?
-
Yes. While they’re Most panels come with a 25-year performance warranty and require minimal maintenance.
- Can I add battery storage later?
-
Absolutely. We can design your system to be “battery-ready” so you can add storage when the time is right.
- Do I need planning permission?
-
In most cases, solar PV installations are classed as permitted development, but exceptions apply for listed buildings or conservation areas.
- What maintenance is required?
-
In most cases, Solar PV systems are largely maintenance-free. We recommend occasional cleaning and an annual performance check to ensure optimal efficiency.
