Solar PV

Mark

My name is Mark and I am responsible for Better Planet’s Solar PV installations. Solar PV is growing increasingly popular, since the installation is quick and the return on investment is high. However, in order to get the full benefit over the expected life plan (over 20 years!), you need to make sure that you use an experienced installation company, like Better Planet

For most properties, a Solar PV installation is the easiest and financially most rewarding option for home owner who wants to benefit from renewable energy. Depending of available space, most domestic installations range from 2 kWp to 4 kWp. Better Planet offer a 4kWp installation typically consisting of 20 panels.  Home owners benefit from using the electricity and from Feed in Tariffs paid for each kWh produced over 20 years.  The payback time is typically shorter than 10 years and the tax free return on investment can be up to 15%.

Better Planet is:

• MCS accredited and a member of the Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) which means that the installation will meet or exceed industry standards and that you are well protected as a consumer.

• All installations are carried out by our own experienced staff. We do not use subcontractors (except for scaffolding).

• All our installations are subject to bespoke design and project planning to optimise the performance. We do not believe that “one kit fits all”.

• We also work for the commercial sector which means that we can offer home owners excellent savings since we are procuring large volumes of panels, for both domestic and commercial installations.

• From sales, engineers to installers, our friendly staff, are there to ensure that the installation will meet your expectations. This is the reason why over 94% of our clients are happy to recommend us to a friend or a neighbour.

Why Solar PV?

Great investment Thanks to the Feed in Tariffs, Solar PV is an excellent investment. With the current tariff of 14.9p per generated kWh, guaranteed and index linked for 20 years. The pay back is typically less than 10years, while the Feed in Tariffs are paid…

How does it work?

A solar photovoltaic (PV) cell is an electronic devise that produces electricity when light falls on it.  As the light is absorbed by the PV cell it frees up electrons present in the cell.  As the electrons move from the cell, they carry an electrical…

Is my property suitable?

The perfect roof for a Solar PV system is un-shaded and south facing with a pitch between 30 and 40 degrees. Having said that, even far from perfect roofs can still generate generous amounts of electricity and offer good returns with the current Feed in…

Planning Permission

The governments Planning Portal gives the following recommendations: In many cases installing solar panels on domestic land is likely to be considered ‘permitted development’ with no need to apply to the council for planning permission. There are, however, important limits and conditions which must be…

Stand alone solar panels installations (panels not on a building)

All the following conditions must be observed: Panels on a building should be sited, so far as is practicable, to minimise the effect on the amenity of the area. When no longer needed for microgeneration panels should be removed as soon as reasonably practicable. All…

Energy performance certification requirement

In order to be eligible for the feed in tariffs, the property the electricity is fed into must be rated as energy of Band D or above in the energy performance certification (EPC).  You must make sure you have EPC certification which Better Planet can help you with. If you…

General information and background

In order to incentivise the uptake of solar PV panels, the government has introduced so called Feed in Tariffs (FITs). Rather than an upfront grant, the tariffs are paid out over the life of the panels in relation to how much electricity (in kWh) the…

How much energy will I produce?

The total energy output of the system is dependant several different factors: 1. The size of the system 2. Location of the system 3. The orientation of the system 4. Any shading that occurs Solar PV’s generally are a permitted development, and therefore should not…

Prices and returns

Prices of Solar PV components have been reduced significantly over the last years. For example, we can now offer 4kW systems from around £6,500 including VAT.  With current Feed in Tariffs annual returns are excellent, furthermore the Feed in Tariffs are tax free. If you request…

Equipment: Panels and inverters

Most home owners aim at installing close to 4 kWp in order to maximise the benefit from the Feed in Tariffs. With the monocristalline panels we recommend from Amerisolar, 4 kWp corresponds to 20 x 200Wp panels (4 kWp) or 16 x 250Wp panels (4…

Service and Maintenance

Solar PV needs little maintenance – you’ll just need to keep the panels relatively clean and make sure trees don’t begin to overshadow them. In the UK panels that are tilted at 15° or more have the additional benefit of being cleaned by rainfall to…

Frequently Asked Questions

1.  How does a solar PV electric system work?   Solar panels generate electricity using energy from the sun. The panels produce energy from daylight, not direct sunlight, so they still produce energy on cloudy or overcast days. An inverter converts the electricity from direct…

Solar panels mounted on a house

Solar panels mounted on a house or on a building within the grounds of a house All the following conditions must be observed: Panels on a building should be sited, so far as is practicable, to minimise the effect on the external appearance of the…

Building Regulations

Building Regulations If you wish to install a solar panel on your roof building regulations will normally apply. The ability of the existing roof to carry the load (weight) of the panel will need to be checked and proven. Some strengthening work may be needed….
