A collector (or ground) loop collects the thermal energy from the ground and brings it into the heat pump. The layout of the collector loop can vary depending on your property size. Below, are three diagrams which illustrate different ways to collect the thermal energy.
Various collectors
If the property space is limited or if the building is located on a rock, the best option is to drill a bore hole.
1
Bore hole
If there is a generous amount of space outside the property, and the soil is relatively easy to dig, the best option would be to dig a horizontal ground loop.
2
Ground loop
If the property is located near a lake, pond or another source of water, the collector can be installed on the bottom of the waterbed. This can also work if you an existing well with a good amount of groundwater flow.
